Why is the Climate Change problem as alarming as a pandemic?
Apart from the COVID-19 pandemic’s destructive impact on our livelihoods, another threat felt across the globe is Climate Change.
Over the past months, we have seen massive floods wreaking havoc across many regions, such as Germany, Belgium, across Europe and many provinces in China. Part of this is due to Climate Change induced storms and prolonged rainfall.
Climate Change’s impact is being felt by avid coffee-drinkers too.
Abnormal conditions over the past months across Brazil have blanketed coffee plants with frost.
The resulting decline in output of Brazil coffee beans, which normally account for one-third of global output, means a decrease in global supply and subsequently a rise in prices. In the near future, the next cup of coffee you buy could be more expensive.
The book “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster” reveals that humans presently release about 54 billion tons of greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide) into the atmosphere.
If we continue to release greenhouse gases this way, what will this do to our earth?
Data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) forecasts that ...
If we continue to emit more greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide) at this rate, the world’s average temperature will rise by 1.5-3 degrees Celsius by the middle of this century and 4-8 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
Rising temperatures will bring more severe weather phenomenon with greater frequency, inevitably impacting humans and the earth we live in.
All this confirms that the Climate Change threat is closer than you may think. Climate Change is being closely watched as much as the pandemic.
Major countries such as the US, Europe, and even China, are stepping up their responses. This includes promoting renewable energy and innovative solutions.
A key question is what investors or the general public can do to contribute towards efforts to address Climate Change.
Besides changing our habits to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, another way we can contribute is by investing in companies which are keen on addressing Climate Change and the environment.
At KTAM, we offer a way to invest in companies keen on improving the climate and environment. We are pleased to present the KTAM Global Climate Change Equity Fund or “KT-CLIMATE” fund.
KT-CLIMATE has an investment policy to focus on the Schroder International Selection Fund Global Climate Change Equity (Class C).
The master fund invests in companies with policies or innovative solutions to combat Climate Change.
For example, such policies or innovation supported by the master fund include:
- Microsoft has an admirable policy to bring greenhouse gas emissions down to “negative” by 2030 by using Carbon Capture solutions around its premises worldwide, coupled with the use of solar energy to power the organization.
- Amazon.com, a leading US e-commerce firm, is gravitating towards “electric powered vans” to deliver packages and budgeting 66 billion Baht to support carbon dioxide reduction projects.
- Texas Instruments, a major US semiconductor firm, is pursuing innovation in semiconductor chips to raise efficiency and reduce energy consumption of electronics.
- Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, or BMW, is turning into an electric vehicle manufacturer.
Why are investments in businesses that are responsive towards Climate Change and the environment becoming a desirable trend?
Most important, state fund flows are now pouring in to support this sector.
As example of such policies, the US government’s American Jobs Plan earmarked 2.3 trillion USD in support of EV industries, clean energy, and businesses that are addressing measures to deal with Climate Change.
This means that investing in such business sectors can generate financial returns, yet protect the earth at the same time. Play a part to fight and cope with Climate Change.
